I was there! I was in the room where it happened, and it was spectacular. The theatre nerd in me couldn’t help but feel a little giddy walking through the doors of the newly renovated SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center and up the lighted staircase to the doors of the theatre. Being able to share this experience with my equally nerdy 13-year-old, who just so happens to be studying the American Revolution in her History class made this night even more memorable. Neither of us prepared for the range of emotions that we would feel and the many goosebumps that we would shake off, during the two-hour and forty-five-minute performance of Broadway Sacramento’s Hamilton.

With only six companies currently performing the show across the world, I can’t help but think that Sacramento got the best one. The dance and song of the ensemble truly brought down the house. The creative way they used tables and chairs of a set change to make a scene come alive and the compelling way they were able to convey slow motion through dance was mesmerizing. The powerful voices of Donald Webber, Jr. (Aaron Burr) and Darnell Abraham (George Washington) and their ability to command the stage with those voices made me feel all the feels. The comedic relief that Paris Nix (Marquis de Lafayeete/Thomas Jefferson) and Rick Negron (King George) provided was perfectly timed and cheered on every single time by the audience. And of course, the emotion and energy that Milika Cherée (Eliza), Marja Harmon (Angelica) and Julius Thomas III (Alexandar Hamilton) were able to convey with their performances not only brought me to tears but was also felt deep in my soul. My favorite part of the entire show was its ability to tell the story of one of America’s founding fathers in a current and entertaining way. Also, the cabinet meeting mic battles were epic!

The performance of Hamilton generated many questions from my daughter and provided a great discussion on the way home. I was able to share the underlying messages this production provides and used it as another teaching moment that a parent has with their child. Both her and I would like to raise a glass to freedom, to forgiveness, to diversity, to hard work, to the stories of our past, and after a brief hiatus, to the return of theatre. Go see Hamilton. You won’t be disappointed!
